Last updated 14/11/2018 Dr Stephanie Bown, MPS Director of Policy and Communications said, 'MPS strongly supports transparency in the NHS and believes that this is key to protecting and promoting public confidence in the medical profession. However, to achieve this, the performance data for surgeons must be accurate and consistent in its collection and presentation. MPS has experience of members who have had higher mortality rates published due to inaccurate information. This can have a devastating impact on a doctor’s confidence in the system and is misleading to patients. When considering the value of ratings based on individual surgeon’s performance, it should be remembered that the success of an operation is dependent on the whole team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals.'
