Queen’s Speech: MPS disappointed cost of clinical negligence not raised

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is disappointed that the rising cost of clinical negligence was not included in today’s Queen’s Speech, which sets out the government’s legislative programme for the parliamentary year.

MPS is urging the government to prioritise reform of the legal system to drive down the costs of claims. As part of its priorities for the new government, MPS is recommending a fixed costs regime for small value claims to help make clinical negligence more affordable for society.1

Dr Pallavi Bradshaw, Senior Medicolegal Adviser at MPS said:

"We are concerned about diversion of vital funds from frontline services to meet the increasing costs of clinical negligence claims and the impact this may have on patient care.

“A fixed cost regime for small value clinical negligence claims should be a priority for the government this year, and we are seeking to engage with them on how to make this a reality.”
