We get a number of queries about indemnity requirements for practice staff. Here are answers to two of our most commonly asked questions.
Do nurses need to have individual professional protection?
It is a legal requirement for nurses to hold an indemnity arrangement in order to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
As part of the MPS Practice Xtra group membership we are able to offer complimentary indemnity-only membership for practice nurses and nurse practitioners employed in your practice.
MPS has three levels of membership for nurses depending on the tasks they undertake. The number of complimentary indemnity-only memberships for nurses per practice will depend upon the number of MPS GP members the practice has.
For further information about individual nurse membership call our Membership helpline on 0800 952 0441.
Do my healthcare assistants and other unregistered healthcare professionals need individual indemnity arrangements?
There is no requirement for healthcare assistants, phlebotomists and dispensers to hold individual indemnity arrangements. In a GP partnership it is the partners who have responsibility for the acts and omissions of other healthcare professionals and staff they employ.
GP partners who are members of MPS are entitled to request assistance from MPS in relation to a claim arising where one of the above employed healthcare professionals is involved.
