Commenting on the Government response to the Paterson Inquiry, Simon Kayll, Medical Protection Society (MPS) Chief Executive, said:

“This has been a crucial inquiry for those patients who needlessly suffered. We fully support changes that could help to identify concerns earlier, prevent harm, and ultimately improve patient safety, and we welcome the Government’s commitment to delivering on the key recommendations.

“While the Paterson case is extreme and rare, the Government is right to recognise that the issues around compensation – particularly when it comes to deliberate criminal acts – are complex, require comprehensive understanding and should not be rushed. While Paterson was not a MPS member, we engaged with the inquiry to ensure lessons could be learned. MPS is in a strong position to adapt to the potential solutions outlined, and will continue to engage with the Government to ensure any proposed changes in this area are in the best interests of our members.”
