Commenting on the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) report into fatigue among healthcare workers and the potential impact on patient care -

Dr Rob Hendry, Chief Member Officer at Medical Protection, said:

“Sadly, the HSSIB report sums up the day-to-day reality for most NHS workers, with sleep deprivation and fatigue commonly accepted as ‘part of the job’. The effects on the mental wellbeing of healthcare workers and on patient care can however be serious and manifest in a variety of ways. We welcome the call for a review to better understand the risks and inform a strategy to tackle the issue. In the meantime, NHS employers must consider how they can encourage and better facilitate staff to take breaks, hydrate and rest before shifts so they can continue to care for patients safely.”
