Medical Protection actively supports public health initiatives involving the vaccination of susceptible groups in the community, including the flu vaccine.
If an adverse incident occurs under a Patient Group Directions (PGD) arrangement, Medical Protection’s GP partners can request assistance on an Extended Liability basis.
Requests for assistance will be considered if the following steps have been taken:
- Verification of training and competence, eg through obtaining certificates of competence from existing employers.
- Induction of contracted staff regarding Practice clinical governance arrangements, emphasising the need to adhere to Practice protocols covering:
- PGDs
- Vaccine dispensing and ‘cold chain’ transport
- Obtaining patient consent
- Dealing with any complications including anaphylaxis
- Record-keeping
If you have any questions with regards to Extended Liability or you’d like advice on limiting the risks of an adverse vaccination incident occurring, please contact our medicolegal advice line on 0800 561 9090.
