Alika Maharaj
Business Development Executive
I am based in Johannesburg and joined Medical Protection as a Marketing and Membership Agent in a contracting capacity in November 2008, gaining a decade of relevant experience serving Medical Protection members. Over the years I have endeavoured to demonstrate professionalism and commitment, establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with key stakeholders and partners across the South African market from SAMA, SADA and OTASA to academic personnel, in addition to a host of medical and dental organisations.
I enjoy working at Medical Protection and being part of a member-centric global organisation with strong values, ethos and determination to provide ethical products and services to healthcare practitioners. I mostly enjoy my daily interactions and willingness of my work colleagues in sharing knowledge, learning and collaborating experiences in a friendly professional manner, to best serve our members.

I joined Medical Protection in November 2018, following 21 years of pharmaceutical and device/implant sales. The change has been like learning a new language in a foreign country. About the only thing that has remained the same is that I still deal with the medical community – and even that interaction has proved to be remarkably and refreshingly different. I completed three years of medical studies virtually straight out of school, realised just in time that the clinical work was not for me and then put the knowledge I had gained to good use in the medical sales arena.
Once I joined Medical Protection I quickly felt that I had found a match for my values in my work life and soon discovered that I was passionate about this new direction in my career. The challenges have presented opportunities for significant personal growth. It is my privilege to serve our members alongside the many and varied teams and functions in South Africa, the UK and around the world.
Olivia Parbhunath
Business Development Executive
I am responsible for business development within the Western and Eastern Cape regions of South Africa. With more than 18 years of experience within the healthcare industry I have a deep understanding of key trends, insights and challenges facing healthcare organisations and professionals. Having worked in medical, academic and commercial roles I bring a variety of skills, knowledge and experience to my role at Medical Protection.
A medical technologist by training, I have extensive and strong experience within the pathology industry in South Africa. In addition to my medical background, I have had the opportunity to add training and education to my experience, where I lectured at the largest university in the Cape, within the Biomedical Sciences faculty. I then went on to work as a consultant where I worked closely with national and international healthcare organisations to create and deliver solutions to help improve their service delivery. I hold a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences, as well as a Honours degree in Quality Management.
Passionate about the healthcare industry, and working for the world’s leading indemnity provider, I see this role as the perfect opportunity to drive the Medical Protection vision of protecting our members throughout their careers and supporting them through safe practice in medicine.

I joined Medical Protection on 1 August 2019; my role is to maintain a good relationship by better understanding the challenges our members are faced with and providing solutions that will support their professional interest. This is with a focus on making their day to day work more efficient by enjoying their profession with the knowledge that their careers and financial security are well taken care of, with indemnity that provides access to assistance in a wide range of circumstances.
Over the past six months I have had the opportunity to meet and engage with different industry stakeholders and I’ve also established relations with different specialty members from a variety of events. I am looking forward to working closely with members who are based in the Johannesburg East, South and Mpumalanga province in achieving a safer and reliable practice through indemnity that offers defence, support and advice.
