MPS Associates

If you wish to chat informally to a medical colleague you can contact a local Associate.

Associates are a group of MPS members. They provide peer support rather than medicolegal advice, but of course treat everything in the strictest confidence. Any advice needed on a case can only be provided by our specialist medicolegal advisers or expert panel lawyers. Contact details of our Associates can be found below.

  • Dr John Low
    MPS Associate: Dr John Low

    MA (Hons) (Oxford University), BMBCh (Oxford University), FHKAM (Anaesthesiology), FHKCA, FRCA, FANZCA

    Dr Low is a Consultant Anaesthetist and has been working in the specialty of anaesthesia since 1978. He is an instructor for the "Course on Safe Sedation"; by the Hong Kong College of Anaesthetists, as well as an instructor for the St Paul’s Hospital Airway Workshop for Residents. He has also pioneered venous arterial ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) in the private sector in Hong Kong, and was instrumental in introducing critical incident reporting in the major private hospitals in Hong Kong.

    Other notable achievements include:

    • Thirteen years as Professor, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Chinese University of Hong Kong
    • Pioneer in cardiac anaesthesia, cardiopulmonary perfusion, point of care haematology and biochemistry (operating theatres), and trans oesophageal echocardiography by anaethesiologists
    • Researcher in catecholamine stress response to anaesthesia.

  • Dr Barbara Tam
    Dr Barbara TamBSc (Hon) (University of Bristol), MBChB (University of Bristol), FRCSEd, FCSHK, FCOHK, FHKAM(Ophthalmology), MBA (Imperial College)


    Dr Tam is a specialist in Ophthalmology and has been practicing medicine for over 25years.  She has received her specialist training in both the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.  Dr Tam has worked in NHS and HA Ophthalmic units prior to becoming a private practitioner in 2004. 

    Dr Tam has special interests in Vitreoretinal surgeries, cataract and refractive surgeries.  Her areas of expertise lie in sutureless and ultra-small gauges vitrectomies for macula and retinal diseases; Femto-laser assisted cataract surgeries with premium intraocular lenses.

    She is currently an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Hong Kong, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine; and an Honorary Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  She is actively involved in the ophthalmology training for medical students.

     

    Other notable achievements include:

    • A member of the Hospital Governing Committee for the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital.  
    • Vice President of the Hong Kong Association of Private eye Surgeons until 2016. 
      Also a Founding Committee member of the EyeCare Charity Foundation in 2014.
    • In 2016, Dr. Tam was awarded a partial scholarship for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Imperial College London and obtained a Distinction for her final year dissertation on Health care (Current trend in organ transplantation in Hong Kong).
    • The University of Edinburgh Medical Law and Ethics LLM degree commencing September 2019.

  • Dr. Alvin CY Chan
    Dr Alvin ChanMBChB (Chinese University of Hong Kong), DCH (Ireland), PdipCommunityGeriatrics, PGDipClinDerm (London), FHKCFP, FRACGP, FHKAM (Family Medicine), 

    Dr Chan Chung Yuk, Alvin is a Specialist in Family Medicine. He is currently in solo private practice. Dr Chan is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Family Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr Chan graduated in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was awarded the Fellowship of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine in 2004. 

    He became the District Coordinator in Family Medicine of the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority in 2004 and was further promoted to Associate Consultant in 2006. 

    In 2008, Dr Chan took up the challenge to work in the Hospital Authority Head Office as Senior Manager in Primary and Community Services. In 2010, he left the Hospital Authority and set up his own practice whilst taking up the post of Part-time Associate Consultant in the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care of the Kowloon East Cluster until 2015. 

    Other notable achievements include:

     

    • Actively involved in the Hong Kong College of Family Medicine.
    • An examiner in the Conjoint Examination and Exit Examination, and a Council member of the College and Chairman of the Board of Education.
    • Dr Chan served in the community as member of the Clinical Advisory Group on Hong Kong Reference Framework for Preventive Care for Older Adults in Primary Care Settings from 2011 to 2016, and as an ongoing member of the Advisory Group on General Outpatient Clinic Public-Private Partnership Programme since 2016.
